The TU Darmstadt Symphonic Orchestra was founded in 1947 by Dr.-Ing. Karl Marguerre, professor for mechanical engineering at the former TH Darmstadt. He conducted the orchestra and the choir founded in 1951 until his death in 1979.

Martin Knell took over conducting the orchestra in 1981. Having studied music and theology, he initially was teaching music at different schools but proceeded as teacher trainer at the university of Gießen. In 1973 he founded the chamber orchestra Wetzlar, which he conducted until last. Under his leadership the orchestra staged much-noticed Mozart operas and more.

Martin Knell loved music and he managed to pass on this passion to the musicians and the audience. Over many years he conducted and formed the TU Darmstadt Symphonic Orchestra. His choice in program was modern and replicated social and cultural changes. He noted a significant improvement in technical abilities of amateur ensembles due to increased promotion and training of instrumental skills in youths on the occasion of the anniversary concert in 1997.

Wolfgang Kurz conducted the orchestra in the summer term of 2010. Kurz studied conducting at the Hochschule für Musik and philosophy (Baccalaureat) at the Hochschule für Philosophie in Munich. Since 1988 he is teacher for conducting at the Hochschule für Musik in Würzburg and conducts multiple orchestras. His compositions for men's choir and children's choir were awarded prizes multiple times.

Christian Weidt started conducting the orchestra in the winter term of 2010.

The orchestra transformed from an ensemble of mere 30 musicians to a grand romantic symphonic orchestra of regularly 60, sometimes even 100 musicians. Unchanged is the colourful mix of students, employees and alumni of the TU as well as external members.
